Venice – Day 1

On Monday we left for our one week excursion to Venice, Hallstatt and Vienna. This was also Sean’s 10th birthday so lots to celebrate.
It was an early day, up at 4am to get across Malta to catch our 7am flight. We arrived in Venice by 10am and made our way down the main canal to our apartment in the heart of old Venice.

We spent the day wandering around, checking out the many, many interior “streets” and a good number of the 146 bridges in Venice.

We visited the “world’s best bookstore“. I gotta say, it was pretty cool…many nooks and crannies with books on display in varying styles. It was fun browsing and observing the way the owners setup the store.

Sean’s birthday surprise was a gondola ride. The gondalier was a great guy, been doing his trade for 31 years and it’s been a tradition handed down in his family. His boat contains the family name, Strighetta. It was interesting listening to the gondoliers communicating as they approach corners and chatting it up as they passed each other.

Throughout the day we bought gelato and cannoli.  It was a long day so we ended the day with Connie and the boys resting at the apartment while Kim and I went out for a glass of wine along the canal.  Perfect day!
