Michael’s 60th Birthday!

The wifi in Greece has not been great so our attempts at blogging have been painstakingly slow and ultimately abandoned for the most part but I did want to blog Michael’s 60th birthday – May 26.

We all woke up stiff and sore from our Samaria Gorge 16 km gruelling hike (blog to come) the day before and had planned a recovery day at the beach.

Elafonisi Beach was where we headed to spend Michael’s first day being 60. We all agreed it was the most spectacular beach we had ever seen, with shallow lagoons and access to the larger sea around. There were many large sandy coves as well as sandy peninsulas with chairs and umbrellas. And the pink sand…

The beach was almost a two hour drive from Chania, through the mountains, and was well worth it!

Back in Chania, I took the boys to get some souvenirs. Daniel had his eye on a set of chess pieces that represented various Greek Mythology figures. Sean bought a bronze figure of Pegasus.

We then went out to dinner to Thalassino Ageri for fish and seafood. I suggested it out based on excellent reviews and Sarah confirmed the choice by doing some Instagram “research” – it was a successful team effort. The restaurant was at the sea’s edge with tables on the sand. We also celebrated Sarah’s 24th birthday at dinner because we were not home to celebrate with her in person (May 11).

Daniel and Ashlyn continued expanding their palates by ordering swordfish and silver snapper, respectively. Sean even tried a bite of swordfish and a mussel, which he said was “not appetizing” (at least he tried it – the restaurant made him plain noodles).

It was a great day and a lovely family dinner! Crete is an amazing island; we only saw the tip of the iceberg. Tomorrow we are off to Athens.
