Mellieha Grab Bag

Today we hung around Mellieha and checked out the town’s church and surroundings. The church is approached from our seaside flat via a winding road.  From the church is a beautiful view of the bay (and the winding road)…the enormous White House at the top of the cliff in the distance belongs to a weapons dealer, and the slightly smaller place to the right is my aunt’s place…not a bad view!  Throughout Malta, including all around the church, are old stone walls that have passed the test of time, despite not being mortared together.

The church itself was locked but the sanctuary underneath was open, so we ventured inside.  The boys lit a candle in the sanctuary for their Nannu who passed away in June 2021.

We also checked out the bomb shelter which was dug out under the church.  A network of underground hallways with small caves (~50-70 sq ft) dug out as rooms for families who needed a permit for the privilege of protecting the family from bombing outside, while dealing with typhoid, tuberculosis, lice, and dust mites in the cave.

As the day wound down, we captured a nice shot of the sun setting behind the bay, and a shot of the church lit up for the evening.

  1. Of all the amazing places that I’ve visited in and around Malta, my favourite place is Melleiha. Glad the boys lit a candle for Nannu there.
