We thought long and hard about doing this hike. There is no doubt that it is a “must do” in Crete but the guide books warn that it is a rigorous 16km hike over difficult terrain. The Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe! We were not sure whether it would be appropriate for Sean (the reviews were mixed on whether to bring kids under 12). It was also going to be a 14 hour day, from the time the tour bus picked us up at 6am and returned us home at 8pm.
Anyways…clearly we went for it!!!
Up at 5am. We walked to a nearby hotel to catch the bus at 6am. We drove through the mountains with tons of ups and downs and switch-backs. We are a family of people who get car sick…but everyone mostly slept so that was helpful. We arrived in Omalos at 7am where a little restaurant (that has clearly done this before) had coffee and juice and sandwiches ready. We arrived at the gorge entrance just before 8am and paid our entry (kids under 18 are free – is that an omen?). Within the first 2 km, Daniel lost his hat into the gorge…it kept falling for many many seconds. It could not be rescued. We also came across falling rock signs that I found humorous; telling you to “walk fast.” I think if you are going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, walking fast is not going to change that!
It was an amazing hike! There were so many different landscapes through the gorge. Sean was a real trooper – he kept up with everyone and he did not complain, except once to say “I think I am regretting agreeing to this hike.” We have many pictures, here are a few…

At the end of the hike…sore, tired, and hungry…we were rewarded for our efforts with a swim in the Libyan Sea. It was maybe the most refreshing swim we have ever had!
And then we feasted on some souvlaki at a beach side canteen and had some cocktails!

Amazing family effort! I am impressed. Also impressing are the drinks girls! 😀
