Marsaxlokk – Fisherman’s Port

Marsaxlokk is a port on the south end of Malta that is renowned for the “luzzu”, a traditional Maltese fishing boat that is usually painted blue, yellow, red and green.  The fisherman head out early in the morning and by sunrise are coming back in with their day’s catch.  Each Sunday morning, the fish market opens around 7:30am and today we made a point of driving across the island to be there when the market opened.

When you observe the fisherman taking the fish from their nets, and notice that many of the men are long in age, you realise that this is what they do, and what they’ll be doing well into their later years.  It’s in their blood, it’s their trade, and they love fishing.

The bow of these boats is decorated with the “eyes of Osiris”, a symbol of Phoenician origin that offers protection from the dangers of the sea.

It was interesting being at the port first thing in the morning.  The sun was low in the sky but offered warmth to the slight chill in the air.  The numerous merchants were setting up their venues where they sell everything imaginable.  But our focus this morning was to make our way to the fish stands, to buy freshly caught fish for tonight’s dinner.  We bought these two fish, but also loaded up on tiger shrimp, some desserts, bread, and a few other odds and ends.

I’m happy to report that both the fish and the shrimp made for a great dinner…and the dessert was equally as good!

  1. We did that as well but ate at a local restaurant, the largest plates of shrimp you can imagine. Of course the feral cats were nearly in our laps wanting us to feed them. Great times
