Malta Sunset

As our trip to Malta wound down, we decided to make an effort to see the sunset from various locations near the town of Mellieha. That means driving down rocky, questionable roads towards the cliffs edge, and sometimes requiring a bit of a walk.
Malta’s west coast is mostly cliffs…they are high and they are rugged, and the ground is always jagged rock that does a number on flip flops and sandals…and ankles if you’re not careful.
But the views are always worth the trip. On this occasion, Kim and I ventured without the boys, walking down a path following a group of horses after parking the car.

We then took the boys to paradise bay, walked past the beach and climbed an incline up to the cliffs edge. This is near the family “cottage” in Cirkewwa, which we happened to walk by without knowing exactly where we were.

We decided it was wise to not step out onto this piece of rock.  It’s been there for who knows how many millennia, so the odds were low, but they weren’t zero.

Once back at the parking lot, Kim snapped a few pics as the sky turned red, with white and pink oleander in the foreground.

On our last night…day 55…we all ventured to the cliffs near the red tower (see earlier blog entry). When we got out of the car there are signs warning us to not walk past this point, which is about 50 metres from the edge. Naturally, we took the warning under advisement but we needed to investigate why the caution. About 10-20 metres from the edge, a massive crack in the cliff comes into view.

We then took a family pic which represented the setting of our time in Malta. It was VERY windy, so hair was everywhere (as much as my hair can really move at all), and Kim insisted a few pics remain on the cutting room floor.

This is our final post. We had an amazing 8 weeks, it was more an 8 week move than a trip. Our intention from the start of planning was to go for long enough to integrate into the Maltese culture, and give the boys a true experience of Maltese life and connect with our Maltese family. By the end, we were hooked. In some ways Malta doesn’t provide the degree of modern conveniences we enjoy in Canada, but living on the sea was an equalizer. We loved our time there, will treasure our time with family, and leaving to come back to our “normal” lives was painful. We have great memories, a millions pics, and a desire to return again.
