About

Bongu.

When Michael and I got married 15 years ago, we made a promise to each other to see a new part of the world every two years. We did manage to see Newfoundland, Cuba, Malta, Costa Rica, California, Hawaii, and many parts of our beautiful province of Ontario.

We started to dream bigger, inspired by a book we read called How to be a Family by Dan Kois. In the book he chronicles his family’s year-long trip around the world.

With girls in University, boys in elementary school, and careers that are difficult to leave behind, we contemplated our options. A 2-month trip to Malta would enable us to introduce the boys to their Maltese roots (something we had previously done with the girls) and Malta is a good home base from which to visit a few other European spots. Great idea, but could we pull it off?

After a few weeks, we approached our employers and they accepted the idea! We found the perfect apartment and booked it. Things were coming together. Then…

COVID

We had no choice but to delay the trip, so we contacted the apartment owners and asked them to rebook us for the following year. We monitored the unfolding pandemic and as Europe opened up to travellers, we gradually started scheduling side trips to Italy and Austria. Then a second trip to Greece where we would fly the girls to meet us for Michael’s 60th birthday.

Planes, trains, and automobiles booked! Apartments booked in all locations! Vaccines completed! We are set to go!

On this site you can follow along with us as we blog our journey. We hope you will check in from time to time to see what we are up to.
